Quote: And how much power is needed to move the tlauncher assembly, extend the reload gantry and load the new missile pack? Taking into account these operations it takes alot more power than an AA battery to fire the rockets - when the whole process is worked out. Translate this to eve, and the extra cap requirement for launchers looks a little more logical. Cap will be used to arm the missiles, move them from the magazine, feed targeting data, move/open the launchers, etc. - so the additional cap requirements could be explained away quite well - I see them as some where between hybrids and projectile weapons - larger ammo to move around (more than proj) but less power to arm/launch (less than hybrids).
I like the idea for more cap usage on missiles (and I fly a Raven - sometimes)
Your right about some of this, but wrong and misdirected about others.
Power used for activating missile launch is defined as this:
Energize Targeting System to allow lock Charging Flight Control systems Igniting rocket motor
Thats not alot of power, regardless.
As for loading, extending, moving and opening, not applicable.
Loading: no power, just like all OTHER weapons that use expendable ammo (hybrids, projectiles, etc) Extending: Not applicable, launchers are always ready to fire Moving: Launchers are fixed in position and orientation Opening: See Extending.
As you can see, the only power needed would be what little is needed to activate the missile, the missile is a self propulsion guided warhead. The launchers don't even have to 'throw' the missile out since the missile can take care of that on its own.
And most missiles in the military we have today, have batteries for the guidance and targeting system, they just need the ignition power for the engines. A simple 9v battery could fire a Sidewinder missile (heat seeker). Even less for 20mm gatling gun bullets, which can be set off by EM from radar or communications (which is why their shut down when reloading planes on the flight deck of carriers with bullets).
Now that you have a LOGICAL basis for comparison, rethink your claim. It ain't over till the fat lady falls on ya!
